The weather was ideal for shooting with a bright sunny sky and no wind, so high scores were to be expected. With 325 entrants shooting, the day was split into the morning and afternoon shoots. But even with this, the morning squads took nearly 4½ hours to complete the 100 targets.

Leeds Met fielded 2 shooters as individuals, Sam Pearson & Ben Pay. Both Sam & Ben are current junior champions for Leicestershire & Bedfordshire and have had very similar shooting results for their counties, so it was going to be very interesting as to the scores they were likely to finish on.

West Midlands Shooting Ground is a picturesque venue set in woodlands with a variety of different stands ranging from shooting at clays fired from a cliff top to shooting into a quarry. Both shooters started solidly, hitting all the targets on their opening stands and at the half way point were within a shoot of each other. Not having met before, Sam & Ben looked as if they had a competition going amongst themselves. This spurring on & encouraging of each other was obviously working, as they both shot a better 2nd half of the competition even though they were held up for long periods on the final 3 stands. Now the wait came, having recorded their scores, they now had to wait for the afternoon shooters to finish. Well the wait was worth it. Out of 325 shooters, Sam came 2nd with a score of 91/100 and Ben came 4th with 88/100. Both had achieved their highest scores in English Sporting which was a credit to both of them. Dave Grisedale representing Royal Agricultural College was the overall winner with a fantastic 94/100.If Leeds Met could find a couple more shooters, then they would have a solid base for a team to challenge in the team competition and really ruffle some feathers amongst the traditional favourites.
